Summary

Functional neurologic disorder (FND) is a critical cause of postpartum neurological symptoms, especially in diverse populations. Early recognition and culturally sensitive care are vital for accurate diagnosis and recovery.

Background:

Functional neurologic disorder (FND) is an underrecognized cause of acute neurological symptoms in the postpartum period.
It disproportionately affects culturally diverse patient populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To highlight diagnostic and management challenges of postpartum FND.
To emphasize the need for trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care in postpartum neurological presentations.

Main Methods:

Case report of a Nepali immigrant diagnosed with postpartum FND after Cesarean delivery.
Review of diagnostic workup including neuroimaging and differential diagnoses (stroke, catatonia, dissociative states).

Main Results:

Extensive workup was unremarkable, and neurological deficits resolved spontaneously after ammonia inhalant stimulation.
The patient was diagnosed with postpartum FND, underscoring challenges in differentiating it from organic neurological conditions.

Conclusions:

Postpartum FND requires vigilant clinical suspicion to avoid unnecessary interventions.
Culturally grounded psychoeducation and cross-disciplinary collaboration are essential for holistic patient recovery.
