A Novel Modified Loma Linda Technique for Repair of Large Maxillary Sinus Membrane Perforations: An 8-Month Follow-Up

Objective:
To present and evaluate a novel modification of the Loma Linda technique for the repair of large Schneiderian membrane perforations during maxillary sinus augmentation, assessing outcomes after an 8-month follow-up.
Methods:
Fifteen patients with perforations >5 mm encountered during lateral window sinus lift were treated using the modified technique. A resorbable pericardium membrane was stabilized with titanium bone tacks, double-layer coverage, and simultaneous bone grafting.
Results:
Mean perforation size was 8.7±2.1 mm; mean bone-height gain was 7.9±1.3 mm. Two cases (13.3%) showed partial graft migration, both resolved without sinusitis or infection. A significant positive correlation was found between initial perforation size and bone-height gain ( r= 0.73, P= 0.002).
Conclusion:
The modified Loma Linda technique provides reliable closure and bone regeneration for large sinus membrane perforations with a low complication rate and predictable clinical outcome.
