    Background:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a 0.75% malassezin formulation.
    • To compare malassezin against 4% hydroquinone, the established standard treatment for melasma.

    • A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, split-face study involved 20 adult females with mild-to-moderate melasma.
    • Participants applied either malassezin or hydroquinone twice daily.
    • Efficacy was assessed via visual improvement, Melasma Area Severity Index (MASI) scores, colorimetry, and photography.

    Main Results:

    • Both malassezin and hydroquinone showed significant improvements in skin brightening, global appearance, and hemi-MASI scores from baseline.
