Summary

Providing simple precautionary information on radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) from mobile phones did not increase public risk perception or decrease trust. Elaborate explanations of precaution, however, raised risk perception.

  • Precautionary information generally increased self-efficacy and message consistency perception. Greek participants and women reported higher risk perception and lower trust. Simple precautionary messages did not increase public concern.

Conclusions:

  • Communicating simple precautionary information about personal mobile phone RF-EMF exposure can be done without escalating public concern.
  • Emphasizing conceptual distinctions between precaution and prevention may inadvertently increase risk perception.
  • Risk communication strategies should consider sociocultural and individual differences, such as country and gender, for greater effectiveness.
