Microenvironments01:22

Microenvironments

Microorganisms inhabit highly localized spaces known as microenvironments, which are defined by distinct physical and chemical characteristics. These include oxygen concentration, pH, temperature, light availability, and nutrient levels. The conditions within a microenvironment can differ markedly from those in the surrounding area and significantly influence microbial growth, metabolism, and community structure.Microenvironments often display sharp physicochemical gradients over small spatial...

Microbial Bioremediation of Plastics

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a synthetic polymer widely utilized in the packaging industry, particularly for bottles and containers. Due to its chemical stability and durability, PET accumulates in the environment, contributing significantly to plastic pollution. It comprises repeating units of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, resulting in a semi-crystalline structure that is resistant to natural degradation processes.A notable breakthrough in plastic biodegradation came with the...

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Fluid Dynamics
  • Geoscience

Background:

  • Understanding microplastic (MP) transport in rivers is crucial for environmental modeling.
  • Previous research focused on vertical settling, neglecting lateral movement dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the three-dimensional settling behavior of environmental microplastics.
  • To quantify lateral drifting, settling paths, and horizontal velocities of MPs.

Main Methods:

  • Collected environmental MPs from various aquatic and sediment sources.
  • Quantified MP geometric properties using a dynamic particle image analyzer.
  • Tracked and reconstructed MP settling trajectories with a multicamera system.

Main Results:

  • Spherical MPs exhibited minimal lateral displacement during settling.
  • Elongated MPs (rods, blades) showed significant lateral movement, up to 65 times their diameter.
  • Elongated MPs drifted more than twice as far laterally as spheres.

Conclusions:

  • Particle shape strongly influences microplastic dispersion in rivers.
  • Elongated MPs are likely to disperse more widely, increasing bank interactions.
  • Findings are vital for accurate riverine microplastic transport models.
