The Persian translation of the Prolapse and Incontinence Knowledge Questionnaire (PIKQ) is a valid and reliable tool for assessing patient knowledge of urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). This validated questionnaire aids in understanding and improving patient education on these conditions.
Area of Science:
- Urogynecology
- Medical Education
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) are prevalent conditions affecting women's quality of life.
- Assessing patient knowledge is crucial for effective management and treatment adherence.
- The Prolapse and Incontinence Knowledge Questionnaire (PIKQ) is an established tool for evaluating this knowledge.
Purpose of the Study:
- To translate the PIKQ into Persian.
- To evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the PIKQ for use in an Iranian population.
Main Methods:
- A descriptive cross-sectional study involving 205 women was conducted.
- Standardized translation and back-translation methods were employed for the Persian version.
- Psychometric properties, including content validity, construct validity (confirmatory factor analysis), and reliability (test-retest, KR-20), were assessed.
Main Results:
- Confirmatory factor analysis indicated acceptable model fit for both UI and POP components after item refinement, though original items were retained.
- Convergent validity was confirmed with Average Variance Extracted (AVE) reaching 0.5 for PIKQ-UI.
- Reliability was good, with intraclass coefficients of 0.852 for PIKQ-UI and 0.646 for PIKQ-POP, and KR-20 values of 0.775 and 0.756, respectively.
Conclusions:
- The Persian version of the PIKQ demonstrates good validity and reliability.
- This translated tool is suitable for assessing knowledge regarding UI and POP among Persian-speaking women.
- The PIKQ can be utilized to enhance patient understanding and educational interventions for these conditions.
