Abstract:
The anti-obesity effects of capsaicin have been widely verified in cell and animal models and human trials. Notably, the effects of these actions may be influenced by external factors, such as the type of capsaicin, intake method, and dosage, as well as by the host's inherent physiological conditions and gut microbiota responses. Additionally, the insufficient safety evaluation of capsaicin remains a bottleneck restricting the current development of functional foods. In response to these issues, this review summarizes the extraction and purification strategies for capsaicin, as well as the mechanisms by which it alleviates obesity. Furthermore, it discusses the factors that influence the physiological functions of capsaicin and provides corresponding suggestions. This review aimed to offer new strategies and a theoretical basis for the value-added utilization of capsaicin.
