Abstract:
This study investigated nitrogen removal performance and mechanism of biochar-enhanced single-stage partial denitrification/anaerobic ammonia oxidation (PD/A) system in sequencing batch reactor under carbon to nitrogen ratio (chemical oxygen demand (COD) /nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), C/N) was 2. The results showed that nitrate, ammonium-nitrogen and total nitrogen removal efficiency increased to 76.49 ± 3.36 %, 87.54 ± 3.35 % and 81.20 ± 2.92 %, respectively, as 10 g biochar prepared from corn stover was injected into PD/A system after 73 cycles of operation. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of Candidatus_Kuenenia and Thauera as functional consortium of PD/A system elevated from 16.26 % and 2.77 % to 26.84 % and 6.10 %, respectively, and functional groups (-OH and CO) on the surface of biochar significantly reduced after reaction. In addition, extracellular polymeric substance significantly promoted, enhanced extracellular electron transfer efficiency, thereby elevating nitrogen removal performance. This study offers new insights into enhancement of nitrogen removal performance of PD/A process by biochar.
