Nociception01:44

Nociception

33.0K
Nociception—the ability to feel pain—is essential for an organism’s survival and overall well-being. Noxious stimuli such as piercing pain from a sharp object, heat from an open flame, or contact with corrosive chemicals are first detected by sensory receptors, called nociceptors, located on nerve endings. Nociceptors express ion channels that convert noxious stimuli into electrical signals. When these signals reach the brain via sensory neurons, they are perceived as pain.

Analgesia and Pain Management

1.5K
Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Foetal pain perception is debated due to non-verbal cues. Emerging evidence suggests foetuses may experience pain and consciousness from the second trimester, supported by advanced imaging and behavioural studies.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Biology
  • Bioethics

Background:

  • Assessing foetal pain is challenging due to reliance on non-verbal behaviours.
  • While newborn pain is accepted, the timing of pain perception during intrauterine development is debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review literature and present a position on foetal pain perception.
  • To argue that foetuses in the 2nd to 3rd trimester may experience pain and exhibit varying consciousness.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review to form a position paper.
  • Analysis of emerging evidence on foetal consciousness and pain indicators.

Main Results:

  • Foetal consciousness may exist on a spectrum, with levels of awareness and responsiveness.
  • 4D ultrasound reveals pain-indicative facial expressions, leading to specialized scales.
  • MEG, EEG, and learning paradigms show goal-directed actions, memory, and cognition in foetuses.

Conclusions:

  • Research on foetal pain enhances clinical care, bioethics, and neurodevelopmental neuroscience.
  • Understanding foetal pain offers insights into pain perception, neuroethics, and clinical sciences.
