Community Based Intervention

269
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • High prevalence of overweight and obesity in Singapore requires scalable prevention.
  • Community-based, at-risk adults without diabetes or hypertension were targeted.
  • A 12-week, digitally delivered, group-based behavioral weight management program (FitterLife) was implemented.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the short-term effectiveness of the FitterLife program.
  • To assess weight loss and BMI reduction at 12 weeks.
  • To identify behavioral factors associated with successful weight management.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective matched cohort study comparing FitterLife participants (n=306) with controls (n=5087).
  • Propensity score matching (1:1) and inverse probability weighted regression were used for analysis.
  • Mixed-effects models and modified Poisson regression analyzed weight/BMI trajectories and success factors.

Main Results:

  • FitterLife participants were significantly more likely to achieve ≥5% weight loss (45.7% vs. 13.7%).
  • The program group achieved significant reductions in weight (-2.23 kg) and BMI (-0.86 kg/m²).
  • Higher session attendance and improved behavioral factors correlated with successful outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • FitterLife demonstrated effectiveness in achieving clinically significant short-term weight loss in a real-world setting.
  • The digitally delivered, group-based behavioral model is a viable primary prevention strategy.
  • Findings support the integration of virtual group models into national chronic disease management efforts.
