Elevated monocyte-to-HDL cholesterol ratio predicts severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Abstract:
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) presents with various cues and symptoms such as witnessed apneas, excessive daytime sleepiness, and snoring. However, these symptoms are not exclusive to OSAS and can be indicative of a spectrum of sleep disorders. Despite its global prevalence, there lacks a clinical predictor for determining OSAS incidence and severity. This study aims to explore the correlation between the monocyte-to-HDL cholesterol ratio (MHR) and obstructive sleep disorders, thereby eslishing a predictive framework for OSAS and its severity in clinical settings. The study included a total of 391 subjects, including 102 control and 298 OSAS group. The control was determined not to have OSAS, while the OSAS group was further divided based on the severity of the OSAS, including (84 mild, 98 moderate, and 107 severe). The study was conducted retrospectively, and statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS statistical software version 26.0. The difference was statistically significant in the levels of MHR, body mass index, blood lipids (triglyceride (Tg)), blood glucose (Glu), Total WBC, Monocytes, Hemoglobin, ALT, creatinine, uric acid and polysomnographic (PG) parameters (apnea-hypopnea index, minimal SpO2) in the OSAS group (P < .05). The MHR level for the severe OSAS group was 10.7, which was higher than the control (8.6), mild OSAS (9.2), and moderate OSAS (9.1). Additionally, the value of MHR levels was significantly higher in patients with hypertension and coronary heart diseases. The study revealed that the monocyte-to-HDL ratio (MHR) was shown to increase with the apnea-hypopnea index, which emphasizes its utility as a predictor of OSAS.
