Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

2.8K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Biomedical engineering

Background:

  • Total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) indications, implant designs, and outcomes have evolved.
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is now the leading cause for TWA, surpassing rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • Patient desire for motion-preserving procedures influences TWA trends.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the evolution of TWA over the past decade.
  • To discuss the changing etiologies and patient expectations in TWA.
  • To highlight advancements in implant design for outcome optimization.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature and clinical trends in TWA.
  • Analysis of factors influencing TWA indications and patient outcomes.
  • Examination of experimental research guiding implant development.

Main Results:

  • OA has become the predominant indication for TWA.
  • There is a growing trend towards motion-preserving TWA procedures.
  • Innovations in implant design have contributed to improved functional results.

Conclusions:

  • TWA has significantly advanced, driven by OA prevalence and patient-centered goals.
  • Optimized implant designs are crucial for enhancing functional recovery after TWA.
  • Hand surgeons should consider these advancements for improved patient care.
