Summary

Modified ultrafast Papanicolaou (MUFP) stain offers superior time and cost-effectiveness compared to conventional Papanicolaou (PAP) stain for oral cytology. Both MUFP and rapid economic acetic Papanicolaou (REAP) stains provide comparable or better quality than PAP.

Background:

  • Conventional Papanicolaou (PAP) stain is standard for oral cytology but is time-consuming and costly.
  • Modified ultrafast PAP (MUFP) and rapid economic acetic Papanicolaou (REAP) are proposed as faster, cheaper alternatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and compare the staining quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of PAP, MUFP, and REAP techniques in oral cytology.
  • To determine the optimal staining method for diagnostic advantage in clinical settings.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty volunteers without oral pathology or smoking history provided three smears each.
  • Smears were stained using PAP, MUFP, and REAP methods.
  • Independent observers assessed cell morphology and staining quality; time and cost were measured; Chi-square tests were used for statistical analysis.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in cell morphology staining quality was observed among the three methods.
  • MUFP demonstrated superior overall staining quality and was the most time- and cost-effective.

Conclusions:

  • MUFP and REAP stains offer comparable or improved quality over conventional PAP stain.
  • These alternative methods are well-suited for urgent and economical staining in clinical oral cytology.
