Background:
Scaling and root planing (SRP) remains the gold standard for managing gingival and periodontal diseases. However, adjunctive therapies like ozone and microneedling have emerged as potential methods for enhancing clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of combining microneedling with ozonated olive oil in patients with plaque-induced gingivitis.
Methods:
Forty-five patients diagnosed with plaque-induced gingivitis were randomly assigned into three groups: Group 1 received SRP alone (control), Group 2 received SRP with microneedling, and Group 3 received SRP with microneedling plus ozonated olive oil. Clinical assessments, including Plaque Index (PI) and Gingival Index (GI), were recorded at baseline and after 15 days of treatment.
Results:
All three groups showed improvements in both the Plaque Index and Gingival Index. However, Group 3 (SRP with microneedling plus ozonated olive oil) exhibited the greatest reduction in both indices, with the results being statistically significant compared to the other two groups (P < 0.05).
Conclusion:
The combination of microneedling and ozonated olive oil appears to be a highly effective, minimally invasive adjunct to SRP for managing plaque-induced gingivitis. This therapy demonstrated superior clinical outcomes in terms of plaque reduction and gingival inflammation compared to SRP alone or SRP with microneedling.
