Background:
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have been widely adopted in adult surgical populations to optimize perioperative outcomes. However, their application and effectiveness in pediatric colorectal surgery remain underexplored.
Materials And Methods:
This single-blind, randomized controlled trial included 120 pediatric patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery at two tertiary hospitals in India. Patients were randomized into ERAS (n = 60) and conventional care (n = 60) groups. Outcomes included time to first feeding, time to ambulation, length of hospital stay, pain scores, and complication rates.
Results:
The ERAS group showed significantly earlier initiation of feeding (1.3 vs. 2.8 days, P < 0.001), faster ambulation (1.8 vs. 3.2 days, P < 0.001), shorter hospital stay (4.9 vs. 7.6 days, P < 0.001), and lower postoperative pain scores. Complication rates were also lower in the ERAS group (10% vs. 23.3%, P = 0.045).
Conclusion:
ERAS protocols significantly improve perioperative outcomes in pediatric colorectal surgery. Their integration into standard care can enhance recovery and reduce morbidity.
