Insights

Short-term oral cefcapene therapy improved corneal staining in meibomitis-related keratoconjunctivitis (MRKC) patients. While not statistically significant, it showed potential for symptom improvement alongside standard eyelid hygiene.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Microbiology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Meibomitis-related keratoconjunctivitis (MRKC) is a common ocular surface disease.
  • Effective treatment strategies for MRKC are crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical characteristics and therapeutic response of MRKC patients treated with oral cefcapene pivoxil hydrochloride hydrate.
  • To identify factors associated with favorable outcomes in MRKC treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 62 MRKC patients was performed.
  • 31 patients received oral cefcapene (100 mg TID) for 14 days with warm compression and lid hygiene.
  • Propensity score matching was used to compare cefcapene group with 31 controls receiving standard care.

Main Results:

  • The cefcapene group showed a significantly lower mean corneal staining score (CSS) after one month (0.55 ± 0.65) compared to controls (0.86 ± 0.44, P = 0.032).
  • Higher rates of complete corneal staining resolution (CSS=0) were observed in the cefcapene group.
  • Greater improvement in the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) was noted in the cefcapene group, but did not reach statistical significance.

Conclusions:

  • Adjunctive short-term oral cefcapene therapy significantly reduced CSS in MRKC patients.
  • The reduction in CSS was not accompanied by statistically significant improvement in subjective symptoms (OSDI).
  • Further research may explore optimal cefcapene treatment durations or combinations for MRKC symptom management.
