Magnetic Resonance Imaging01:24

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

9.0K
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical imaging technique based on a phenomenon of nuclear physics discovered in the 1930s, in which matter exposed to magnetic fields and radio waves was found to emit radio signals. In 1970, a physician and researcher named Raymond Damadian noticed that malignant (cancerous) tissue gave off different signals than normal body tissue. He applied for a patent for the first MRI scanning device in clinical use by the early 1980s. The early MRI...

Assessment of Diffusion and Perfusion01:17

Assessment of Diffusion and Perfusion

1.5K
Understanding and evaluating diffusion and perfusion is critical in assessing a patient's respiratory and circulatory health. These processes play key roles in maintaining the body's internal environment, ensuring that tissues receive adequate oxygen while waste products are efficiently removed.
The Role of Diffusion in Respiration
Diffusion is the process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. In the respiratory system, this...

Summary

The functional liver imaging score (FLIS) correlates with liver fibrosis and clinical scores. Adding parenchymal heterogeneity (FLIS-H) significantly improves this association, offering a better non-invasive liver assessment tool.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiology

Background:

  • The functional liver imaging score (FLIS) is used for liver assessment.
  • Its correlation with liver fibrosis and clinical scores requires further investigation.
  • Parenchymal heterogeneity is a potential factor influencing liver function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between FLIS and FibroScan-derived liver fibrosis stage.
  • To determine if incorporating parenchymal heterogeneity (FLIS-H) enhances this association.
  • To assess the relationship between FLIS/FLIS-H and clinical scoring systems (Child-Pugh, MELD, ALBI).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 113 patients undergoing FibroScan and MRI.
  • Calculation of FLIS and FLIS-H (FLIS + heterogeneity score).
  • Assessment of inter-reader agreement and correlation using Spearman's rank correlation and Steiger's z-test.

Main Results:

  • FLIS showed significant negative correlations with fibrosis stage, Child-Pugh, and ALBI scores.
  • FLIS-H demonstrated stronger correlations with fibrosis stage, Child-Pugh, ALBI, and MELD scores.
  • Correlations were significantly improved with FLIS-H for ALBI, Child-Pugh, and fibrosis stage.

Conclusions:

  • FLIS significantly correlates with liver fibrosis stage and clinical scores.
  • Incorporating parenchymal heterogeneity into FLIS (FLIS-H) enhances these associations.
  • FLIS-H offers a superior, practical method for non-invasive liver assessment in clinical radiology.
