Fungal-derived supplements in integrative oncology

There is significant interest in employing fungal-derived supplements to support cancer patients' treatment and enhance their well-being. The use of these supplements is based on evidence from preclinical animal studies that highlight their ability to enhance immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and antioxidant activities. Additionally, there are human clinical studies supporting these findings. While the varied studies suggest potential benefits of fungi, there is a paucity of examples of their utilization by healthcare professionals in the management of cancer care. In general, integrative oncology, which focuses on including natural approaches in patient care, is not commonly practiced. Herein, we provide examples of fungi contributing a positive impact on patients' well-being; this calls for greater investigation into the integration of such supplements in patient treatment. Our goal is to pique interest in the utilization of fungal-derived supplements, as part of an integrative medicine approach to patient care.
