Purpose of the Study:

  • Male C57BL/6J mice were exposed to chronic stress (CS) via pair-housing.
  • Kidney immune cells were isolated and analyzed using spectral flow cytometry.
  • Cytokines, serum creatinine, cystatin C, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) were measured.

Main Results:

  • CS mice showed decreased CD4+ T cells and increased T helper 17 (Th17) and regulatory T cells (Tregs).
  • Macrophage percentage increased in CS mice, along with elevated kidney TNF-α levels.
  • CS led to increased serum cystatin C and significantly higher NGAL levels.

Conclusions:

  • Chronic stress induces kidney inflammation and significant immunologic alterations in mice.
  • These findings suggest CS may predispose to kidney diseases where inflammation is a key factor.
  • The study provides evidence for the detrimental effects of stress on renal health.
