Abstract:
The growing need for sustainable wastewater treatment has led to the development of innovative materials. This study introduces a hydrogel synthesized from psyllium and gum ghatti hybrid backbone, with acrylonitrile as the monomer, glutaraldehyde and ammonium persulfate as the crosslinker-initiator system. Various reaction parameters were optimised to get maximum percentage grafting of 311.20%. The synthesized Psy/GG-g@PAN showed maximum swelling of 1766.96% at time of 10 h, pH 3 and temperature of 45 °C. Because of its good adsorption capacity, the hydrogel is useful to eliminate Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250 dye from aqueous solution. The material showed maximum % dye removal of 98.5% under optimal conditions: 0.75 g/50 mL adsorbent dose, initial dye concentration of 40 ppm, pH 5, temperature of 30 ̊C and contact time of 28 h. The pseudo second order kinetics is best fitted as their experimental qe values matches with calculated qe values. According to adsorption equilibrium data, the best description of adsorption is given by Langmuir isotherm as its R2 value is comes to be unity. Thus, the synthesized material supports continuous efforts to enhance environmental sustainability in water management by providing an effective solution to remove dye from aqueous medium.
