[A Study of Local Anesthesia Surgery Cases for Elderly Breast Cancer Patients]

The standard treatment for breast cancer surgery is for the patient to be under general anesthesia, but many elderly patients are at high risk under general anesthesia. In some cases, it is possible to do surgery under local anesthesia, but there have been few reports evaluating the usefulness of such surgery. Therefore, we investigated this in 17 patients at our hospital. The mean age was 78 years old(median 83, 42-98), and mean tumor diameter 14 mm(median 13, 3-40). The reasons why local anesthesia was selected were due to old age, comorbidities, diagnostic treatment, and difficulty of hospitalization. Surgery involved Bp/Bt in 15/2 cases, and the mean operating time was 30 minutes. There were postoperative complications in 2 cases(1 infection, 1 hemorrhage). The average observation period was 3.5 years;1 patient experienced recurrence and died of breast cancer, 10 patients completed follow-up or dropped out, and 6 patients are still under follow-up. Local anesthesia surgery was performed quickly and relatively safely, and the prognosis was mostly good. In conclusion, surgery under local anesthesia for elderly patients with breast cancer is a useful and reasonable option in terms of improving local control and prognosis.
