Background:

  • Limited research exists on how different blood collection methods affect point-of-care viscoelastic test (VCM Vet) results in canine patients.
  • Understanding these influences is critical for accurate diagnostic interpretation in veterinary medicine.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of various blood sampling techniques on VCM Vet assay outcomes in dogs.
  • To determine if hematological parameters and the ease of blood collection influence VCM Vet results.

Main Methods:

  • Two VCM Vet assays were conducted on 52 healthy dogs.
  • Baseline VCM Vet, CBC, and fibrinogen were measured from direct jugular venipuncture.
  • Subsequent assays used randomized methods: contralateral jugular (vacutainer), saphenous vein, or cephalic IV catheter.

Main Results:

  • Reference intervals were established for VCM Vet parameters from the initial sample.
  • A poor intra-class correlation (ICC < 0.5) was observed between different sampling methods.
  • Weak correlations were found between hematocrit, platelet count, and specific VCM Vet parameters (CT, CFT, alpha, A10, A20, MCF).

Conclusions:

  • Blood sampling protocols demonstrably influence VCM Vet results in dogs.
  • While individual methods are reliable, they are not interchangeable; consistency in method and site is vital for serial patient monitoring.
  • Complete blood count (CBC) results should be considered prior to interpreting VCM Vet findings.
