The degree of freedom for a particular statistical calculation is the number of values that are free to vary. Thus, the minimum number of independent numbers can specify a particular statistic. The degrees of freedom differ greatly depending on known and uncalculated statistical components.
For example, suppose there are three unknown numbers whose mean is 10; although we can freely assign values to the first and second numbers, the value of the last number can not be arbitrarily assigned.

Background:

Over 50% of nursing students report high stress and impaired well-being.
Nursing school presents unique challenges impacting student mental health.
Need for effective interventions to support nursing student well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe an innovative teaching strategy for accelerated second-degree nursing students.
To help students identify personal stressors.
To facilitate the incorporation of individualized self-care strategies.

Main Methods:

A 10-week self-care project was implemented in an accelerated second-degree nursing program.
Components included readings, stress assessments, personalized self-care plans, group reflection, and journaling.
Students developed and utilized tailored self-care strategies.

Main Results:

Students actively used various self-care strategies to mitigate stress.
Maintaining a self-care log was reported as beneficial.
Small group reflections fostered a sense of belonging and mutual support.

Conclusions:

The described teaching strategy is a low-cost, effective method for nursing students.
It successfully enabled students to integrate self-care practices.
The project supported improved well-being among accelerated second-degree nursing students.
