Levels of Organization01:09

Levels of Organization

138.8K
Biological organization is the classification of biological structures, ranging from atoms at the bottom of the hierarchy to the Earth's biosphere. Each level of the hierarchy represents an increase in complexity that builds upon the previous level.
Molecules Are Composed of Atoms, and Biomolecules Are Assembled from Molecules:
The most basic levels include atoms, molecules, and biomolecules. Atoms, the smallest unit of ordinary matter, are composed of a nucleus and electrons. Molecules...

Accessory Organs01:31

Accessory Organs

73.9K
Accessory organs are those that participate in the digestion of food but do not come into direct contact with it like the mouth, stomach, or intestine do. Accessory organs secrete enzymes into the digestive tract to facilitate the breakdown of food.

Organic Compounds03:02

Organic Compounds

56.7K
All living things are formed mostly of carbon compounds called organic compounds. The category of organic compounds includes both natural and synthetic compounds that contain carbon. Although a single, precise definition has yet to be identified by the chemistry community, most agree that a defining trait of organic molecules is the presence of carbon as the principal element, bonded to hydrogen and other carbon atoms. However, some carbon-containing compounds such as carbonates, cyanides, and...

Types of Genetic Transfer Between Organisms

30.6K
Genetic transfer occurs when genetic information is passed from one organism to another. It occurs via two mechanisms: vertical gene transfer and horizontal gene transfer. Vertical gene transfer occurs when genetic information is transferred from one generation to the next, which happens much more frequently than horizontal gene transfer. Both sexual and asexual reproduction are forms of vertical gene transfer, where one or more organisms pass some or all of their genome onto their progeny.

Summary

Human societies face instability due to economic inequality and social factors. A minimal mathematical model reveals that broad wealth distributions drive social unrest and economic boom-and-bust cycles.

Area of Science:

  • Sociology
  • Economics
  • Mathematical Modeling
  • Complexity Science

Background:

  • Recurring patterns in historical data suggest economic inequality and social factors drive societal instability.
  • Existing models of societal instability are primarily macroscopic.
  • Minimal mathematical models may reveal underlying mechanisms of societal dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a minimal mathematical model integrating economic growth and social dissatisfaction.
  • To investigate the relationship between wealth distribution and societal instability.
  • To explore the emergence of boom-and-bust cycles in social systems.

Main Methods:

  • Combined a simple economic growth mechanism with a social dissatisfaction spreading mechanism.

  • Utilized mathematical modeling to simulate societal dynamics.
  • Analyzed the impact of broad wealth distributions (power law) on social phenomena.
  • Main Results:

    • Broad wealth distributions, generated by the economic mechanism, trigger social unrest and wealth destruction.
    • The model demonstrates an emerging pattern of boom and bust cycles.
    • Model timescales show good agreement with empirical data.
    • Emphasized the role of broad (power law) wealth distributions in dynamical social phenomena.

    Conclusions:

    • Minimal mathematical models can capture essential dynamics of societal instability.
    • Economic inequality, particularly broad wealth distributions, is a critical factor in social unrest and economic cycles.
    • The study highlights the predictive power of understanding wealth distribution for social phenomena.
