Cryptococcus fungal infection can cause myelitis, even in immunocompetent individuals. This rare condition requires considering fungal causes in infectious myelopathies, especially when human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is absent.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Neurology
- Mycology
Background:
- Cryptococcosis commonly affects the central nervous system, particularly in HIV-positive individuals, often presenting as meningoencephalitis.
- Spinal cord involvement by Cryptococcus is rare, with limited case reports and heterogeneous presentations, often seen in immunocompetent patients.
