Abstract:
This study presents an eco-designed strategy for lignin valorization. The approach reinforces starch-based aerogels (SA) with lignin nanoparticles (NLP) produced via disc ultra-refining. NLP enhances interfacial interactions by forming strong hydrogen bonds with the starch matrix. Characterization shows that nanostructured lignin creates a robust, interconnected porous structure essential for mass diffusion. In contrast, microscale lignin (LP) disrupts the network. The optimized nanocomposite (SA + 5%NLP) exhibits superior performance in methylene blue removal, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 53.78 mg.g-1. This result significantly outperforms both neat aerogel and LP-based composites. Kinetic data follows the Elovich model, and equilibrium data fit the Langmuir isotherm. Overall, this work establishes mechanical nanostructuring as a sustainable and efficient route for transforming underutilized sugarcane byproducts into high-performance bio-adsorbents for advanced water remediation.
