Abstract:
A nonpillar shaped Pillararene derivative, Oxgens2 pillar[6]arene, has been synthesized via [4 + 2] and [2 + 1+2 + 1] cyclization reactions from an oxygen substituted dimer and an oxygen substituted tetramer, respectively. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal that the introduction of oxygen atoms renders O2 pillar[6]arene 4, a nonpillar shaped macrocyclic arene where the aromatic rings and bridging groups are not coplanar. Adsorption experiments have confirmed that O2 pillar[6]arene 4 exhibits efficient iodine uptake capacity from both gaseous and aqueous phases.
