Benefits and implementation of a delirium concept from a nursing perspective: a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study Abstract: Background: Delirium is a common neuropsychiatric syndrome that can be prevented more effectively with a multicomponent delirium concept for delirium treatment and prevention. Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nursing perspective on the benefits, implementation, acceptance and practicability of different components of the multicomponent delirium concept of a hospital, which was newly implemented in May 2023. Methods: A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire, which was sent to the included nurses (diploma nurses and healthcare assistants). Results: The questionnaire was sent to 360 eligible nurses; the response rate was 15,3%. The benefits of the delirium concept were described as high for the components of recognising delirium, diagnosing delirium and screening for delirium. Collaboration between nurses was less frequently perceived as a challenge in implementing the delirium concept, whereas these aspects were more frequently perceived as a challenge in the multi-professional team. Conclusions: The results of the study indicate a high benefit of the different components of the delirium concept, which is reflected in the high acceptance of the delirium concept by the nursing team and its adequate implementation in everyday clinical practice. In order to further develop the existing delirium concept, a new evaluation should be carried out on the basis of this study, particularly taking into account the perspective of the medical service.
