Researchers developed a new ultraviolet nonlinear optical crystal, [C(NH2)3]SbCl4 (GSC), using guanidine. This material shows promising nonlinear optical properties for advanced optical devices.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Crystallography
- Optics
Background:
- Guanidine units are crucial for developing ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials.
- These materials are essential for creating advanced optical devices due to their unique microscopic optical properties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize a novel guanidinium-templated UV NLO crystal.
- To investigate the NLO properties and structural characteristics of the new material.
Main Methods:
- Aqueous solution method for synthesis.
- X-ray crystallography for structural analysis.
- Optical property measurements (SHG and refractive index).
Main Results:
- Successfully synthesized [C(NH2)3]SbCl4 (GSC), a novel guanidinium-templated UV NLO crystal.
- GSC crystallizes in the chiral space group P212121 with a seesaw-shaped [SbCl4]- anion.
- Observed a moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) response (1.1 × KDP) and a large refractive index difference (0.2).
Conclusions:
- The NLO effect in GSC arises from the synergistic interaction between guanidinium and [SbCl4]- units.
- GSC is a promising candidate for the guanidine family of NLO materials.
- This study contributes to the development of novel UV NLO materials.

Harmonic Mean
Take the example of the speed of a car, which is the measure of the rate of distance traveled. If the vehicle traverses the same distance back-and-forth, its average speed equals the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken. However, if the car moves with varying speeds, then the arithmetic mean is more skewed...
