Abstract:
Professional judgement in forensic & legal medicine (FLM) refers to the ability of healthcare professionals (HCPs) to use their knowledge, experience, and critical thinking skills to make informed decisions about patient care, often in complex or ambiguous situations. Clinicians must keep patients the focus of any assessment and HCPs need to use professional judgement when interpreting Guidelines and/or Recommendations and when there is a clear and justifiable requirement to deviate from a Standard Operating Procedure because of patient need. Only with training and supervision by expert educators will quality standards be maintained with a workforce that is skilled in using professional judgement.
