The pregnancy and post-pregnancy periods are susceptible to the risks posed by the opioid addiction epidemic, including substance use-related deaths in Canada. In a published review of 20 years of post-pregnancy deaths in Ontario (2002-2022), we previously attributed 4.7% of deaths (0.9 per 100,000 live births) to substance use. When adding the years 2022 to 2024 to the previous estimates, another18.5% of post-pregnancy deaths (3.8 per 100,000 live births) were related to maternal substance use. Changes are needed in the traditional model of postpartum care for those living with an addiction or who are at risk of overdose.
