Background:

  • Behçet's disease (BD) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
  • Identifying reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis and risk stratification in BD is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate syndecan-1 as a potential biomarker for cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis in patients with Behçet's disease.
  • To investigate the relationship between syndecan-1 levels, carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), and traditional cardiovascular risk factors in BD patients.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study included 56 BD patients and 56 matched controls.
  • Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) was measured using ultrasound.
  • Serum syndecan-1 levels were quantified using ELISA.

Main Results:

  • Syndecan-1 levels and cIMT were significantly higher in BD patients compared to controls (P < .002 and P < .015, respectively).
  • A significant negative correlation was observed between syndecan-1 levels and cIMT.
  • Stepwise regression analysis identified age, syndecan-1, and low-density lipoprotein as independent predictors of cIMT.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated syndecan-1 levels in Behçet's disease patients may indicate increased cardiovascular risk.
  • Syndecan-1 may play a role in the progression of subclinical atherosclerosis in BD.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm syndecan-1's utility as a cardiovascular biomarker in BD.
