Summary

Adequate muscle mass may protect men from eyelid aging (dermatochalasis), but this link wasn't found in women. This study suggests dermatochalasis could indicate nutritional issues in older men.

Background:

  • Eyelid aging (dermatochalasis) is linked to collagen and elastin loss.
  • Limited research exists on the connection between anthropometric/body composition and eyelid laxity.
  • This study investigates sex-based differences in dermatochalasis related to these parameters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore associations between anthropometric and body composition parameters and eyelid laxity (dermatochalasis).
  • To identify potential sex differences in these associations.

Main Methods:

  • A case series of 58 dermatochalasis patients and 32 controls (aged 50-65).
  • Measured parameters included BMI, arm circumference (AC), waist circumference, calf circumference (CC), arm muscle circumference (AMC), skin folds, fat mass, grip strength, and weight change.
  • Patients were matched for age and sex.

Main Results:

  • Men with lower CC, AC, and AMC were more likely to have dermatochalasis.
  • Mild/moderate-to-severe dermatochalasis correlated with lower AMC in all patients.
  • Women with mild dermatochalasis showed increased suprailiac skinfold and AMC.

Conclusions:

  • Sufficient muscle reserve may offer protection against eyelid aging in men, but not women.
  • Dermatochalasis diagnosis may serve as an indicator for nutritional disorders in older men.
