Abstract:
The potential benefits of glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) have continued to mount exponentially in recent years, with suggested roles in combating chronic disease and mental illness (Drucker, 2024; Hendershot and colleagues, 2025; Jerlhag, 2023). Evolved from the discovery of the naturally occurring incretin hormone, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide in the 1970s, GLP1-RAs were initially developed to treat type II diabetes. Their profound effect on second and third-order comorbidities such as obesity, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders has garnered enormous interest in the mental health community (Drucker, 2024).
