[Hospitalization experience of elderly surgical patients: A phenomenological study]
Purpose:
This study aimed to explore the hospitalization experiences of elderly surgical patients and understand the meaning of these experiences.
Methods:
Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews with 10 elderly patients who underwent general anesthesia surgery at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital and were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method.
Results:
Four theme clusters and 10 themes were identified. The theme clusters were "Limitations faced due to aging," including themes of cognitive and physical decline. "Psychological retreat after undergoing surgery" encompassed role loss, feelings of guilt, and a sense of alienation, respectively. "Loss of freedom in inpatient life after surgery" highlighted dietary restrictions and physical dependence and "Concerns about life after discharge" reflected uncertainties, burdens, and negative thoughts about life.
Conclusion:
This study underscores the need for holistic nursing interventions that address not only the physical but also the psychological and social needs of elderly surgical patients. It also emphasizes the importance of effective communication strategies, emotional support, and post-discharge care. These findings provide foundational data for the development of tailored nursing practices and policies for elderly surgical patients.
