Abstract:
The reference laboratories of the Australian Meningococcal Surveillance Programme (AMSP) report data on the number of cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) confirmed by laboratory testing using culture and molecular based techniques. Data contained in quarterly reports are restricted to a description of case numbers of IMD by jurisdiction and serogroup, where known and expanded in 2024 to include antimicrobial resistance data for ceftriaxone, penicillin, ciprofloxacin and rifampicin. A full analysis of laboratory confirmations of IMD in each calendar year are contained in the AMSP annual reports.
Insights
The Australian Meningococcal Surveillance Programme (AMSP) tracks invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases. Recent data includes antimicrobial resistance for key antibiotics, enhancing public health insights.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Epidemiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) remains a significant public health concern globally.
- Surveillance programmes are crucial for monitoring disease trends and informing control strategies.
- Laboratory confirmation is the gold standard for diagnosing IMD and identifying causative serogroups.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report on the number of laboratory-confirmed invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases in Australia.
- To provide updated data on IMD epidemiology, including jurisdictional distribution and serogroup prevalence.
- To expand reporting to include antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns for key antibiotics.
Main Methods:
- Utilizing data from the Australian Meningococcal Surveillance Programme (AMSP) reference laboratories.
- Employing both culture-based and molecular-based techniques for IMD case confirmation.
- Collecting and analyzing data on case numbers, jurisdiction, serogroup, and antimicrobial resistance.
Main Results:
- Quarterly reports detail IMD case numbers by jurisdiction and serogroup.
- Expanded 2024 reporting includes antimicrobial resistance data for ceftriaxone, penicillin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin.
- Annual reports provide a comprehensive analysis of laboratory confirmations for IMD.
Conclusions:
- The AMSP provides essential data for understanding and managing invasive meningococcal disease in Australia.
- The inclusion of antimicrobial resistance data enhances the Programme's utility for guiding treatment and public health interventions.
- Continued surveillance is vital for tracking changes in IMD epidemiology and resistance patterns.
