A new clinical decision support tool for Parkinson's disease (PD) aids accurate diagnosis using Movement Disorders Society criteria. This digital platform demonstrates high concordance with expert neurologists, improving PD patient care and clinical trials.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Medical Informatics
Background:
- The Movement Disorders Society diagnostic criteria for Parkinson's disease (MDS-PD) offer high sensitivity and specificity.
- Limited adoption of MDS-PD criteria stems from the absence of a clinical decision support (CDS) tool for systematic application.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a CDS platform (CDS-PD) for the standardized electronic implementation of MDS-PD criteria.
- To enhance the accurate and systematic application of MDS-PD criteria in clinical practice and research.
Main Methods:
- Development of a modular and extensible informatics platform (CDS-PD) for recording patient data.
- Real-time application of the MDS-PD diagnostic algorithm within the CDS-PD platform.
- Preliminary validation through comparison with diagnoses made by experienced movement disorders neurologists.
Main Results:
- The CDS-PD platform demonstrated high concordance with the application of MDS-PD criteria by expert neurologists for established Parkinson's disease (≥5 years duration).
- The platform facilitates systematic data recording and diagnostic algorithm application.
Conclusions:
- The CDS-PD platform represents a significant step towards the standardized electronic implementation of MDS-PD criteria.
- This tool has the potential to improve Parkinson's disease patient care and facilitate clinical trials at the point-of-care.
