Self-construal, how people see themselves versus others, predicts the Dark Tetrad personality traits (Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, sadism). Both independent and interdependent self-construal uniquely forecast these antagonistic traits.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Social Psychology
- Personality Psychology
Background:
- Self-construal, encompassing independence and interdependence, shapes individual self-perception.
- The Antagonistic Tetrad (Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, sadism) represents significant personality constructs.
- Understanding the interplay between self-perception and antagonistic traits is crucial in personality research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the predictive relationship between self-construal dimensions (independence and interdependence) and the Antagonistic Tetrad traits.
- To extend previous research on self-construal and the Antagonistic Triad by including sadism.
- To analyze how independent and interdependent self-construal differentially predict each of the four Dark Tetrad traits.
Main Methods:
- A quantitative study utilizing self-report measures.
- Data collected from a sample of 861 Canadian university students.
- Direct entry linear regression analysis was employed to examine predictive relationships, controlling for age and gender.
Main Results:
- Both independent and interdependent self-construal significantly predicted each of the four antagonistic traits.
- The pattern of regression weights varied across the dimensions of self-construal, indicating differential prediction.
- Self-construal emerged as a significant predictor for Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, and sadism.
Conclusions:
- Self-construal differentially predicts the components of the Antagonistic Tetrad.
- Findings highlight the distinct roles of independent and interdependent self-construal in understanding antagonistic personality.
- This study contributes to the literature by incorporating sadism into the examination of self-construal and the Dark Tetrad.
