Lung cancer patients show significant oxidative imbalance, with higher oxidants and lower thiol/disulfide homeostasis. These oxidative stress markers may aid in lung cancer evaluation.
Area of Science:
- Biochemistry
- Oncology
- Oxidative Stress Research
Background:
- Oxidative stress (OS) significantly influences lung cancer development due to disturbed oxidant-antioxidant balance.
- Evaluating specific redox markers like thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) and overall indicators (TAS, TOS, OSI) offers a comprehensive view of oxidative imbalance in lung cancer.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine oxidative stress indices and TDH in lung cancer patients compared to healthy controls.
- To investigate the potential of combined oxidative parameters as complementary biomarkers for lung cancer evaluation.
Main Methods:
- Study included 40 lung cancer patients and 40 healthy controls.
- Serum levels of native thiol (NT), total thiol (TT), disulfide, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) were measured.
- Hematological and biochemical parameters were compared between groups.
Main Results:
- Lung cancer patients had higher white blood cell and neutrophil counts.
- Patients exhibited decreased NT and TT levels, and significantly elevated disulfide levels, TOS, and OSI.
- TAS levels were lower in patients but not statistically significant; no association found between oxidative parameters and tumor stage/localization.
Conclusions:
- Lung cancer patients demonstrate significant oxidative imbalance with increased oxidant burden and impaired TDH.
- Combined assessment of TAS, TOS, OSI, and thiol/disulfide parameters may offer valuable insights into lung cancer pathophysiology.
- These oxidative parameters show potential as complementary biomarkers for lung cancer assessment, warranting further large-scale studies.
