Summary

Postoperative occupational therapy (OT) significantly improved sensory-motor function, especially convergence and fusional abilities, in children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) after strabismus surgery. While ocular alignment changes were minimal, OT enhanced binocular control and stability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the short-term effects of postoperative occupational therapy (OT) on motor and sensory-motor functions in children with IXT following strabismus surgery.
  • To evaluate changes in ocular alignment, vergence amplitudes, and convergence abilities post-OT.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study involving children with IXT undergoing bilateral lateral rectus recession.
  • A 12-week structured OT program was initiated approximately six months post-surgery.
  • Outcome measures included angle of deviation, near point of convergence, positive fusional vergence, and convergence amplitudes; analyzed using paired t-tests and Cohen's d.

  • Postoperative OT significantly enhances short-term sensory-motor function, particularly fusional and convergence capacities, in children with IXT.
  • While OT does not substantially alter static ocular alignment, it serves as a valuable functional adjunct to surgery.
  • The findings support OT's role in improving binocular control and promoting postoperative sensory-motor stability in pediatric patients with IXT.
