Summary
Juvenile Behçet
Area of Science:
- Rheumatology
- Pediatrics
- Immunology
Background:
- Juvenile Behçet's disease (JBD) is a rare, multisystem inflammatory disorder affecting children under 16.
- It presents with diverse symptoms including oral/genital ulcers, and can lead to severe complications like thrombosis and neurological damage.
- Underreporting and diagnostic delays are significant challenges in managing JBD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the clinical characteristics and diagnostic challenges of JBD in Colombia.
- To analyze the time to diagnosis and treatment patterns for JBD in Colombian children.
- To inform clinical awareness and management strategies for JBD.
Main Methods:
- A multicenter, retrospective longitudinal study was conducted.
- Data from 15 pediatric patients diagnosed with JBD between 2014-2024 in three Colombian cities were analyzed.
- Clinical and paraclinical data were extracted from medical records and statistically analyzed.
Main Results:
- The study included 15 patients (60% female) with a mean diagnostic delay of 5.7 years.
- Common manifestations included oral aphthosis (100%), genital ulcers (73.3%), arthralgia (60%), and neurological (40%) involvement.
- Vascular involvement (20%), primarily venous thrombosis, was noted. Pathergy test was positive in 44.4% and viral antigens detected in 46.7%.
Conclusions:
- JBD in Colombia exhibits heterogeneous clinical features, particularly mucocutaneous, musculoskeletal, and neurological symptoms.
- A significant diagnostic delay highlights the need for heightened clinical suspicion in pediatric cases.
- While colchicine and corticosteroids are initial treatments, most patients require immunosuppressants or biologics for effective management.

Clinical Trials
8.5K
Clinical trials are prospective experimental studies conducted on humans to determine the safety and efficacy of treatments, drugs, diet methods, and medical devices. Using statistics in clinical trials enables researchers to derive reasonable and accurate conclusions from the collected data, allowing them to make wise decisions in uncertain situations. In medical research, statistical methods are crucial for preventing errors and bias.

Drugs for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in IBD
700
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the colon and rectum. The primary drugs used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis are aminosalicylates. They exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. They modulate inflammatory mediators and inhibit the activity of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). Aminosalicylates also reduce inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin and leukotriene production and decreasing neutrophil chemotaxis and superoxide...

Drugs for Treatment of Crohn's Disease in IBD Using Immunomodulatory Agents
749
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disorder marked by chronic inflammation of the GI tract. Various treatment strategies for Crohn's disease are employed, such as immunomodulatory agents, glucocorticoids, and biologics or anti-TNF therapy. Azathioprine (Imuran), a commonly used immunomodulatory drug for Crohn's disease, is converted in the body to mercaptopurine, which inhibits purine biosynthesis and cell proliferation. Both are utilized in severe cases of Inflammatory Bowel...

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection primarily affecting the lung parenchyma but which can also affect other body parts. TB can be classified based on disease development, presentation, and the affected anatomical site.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Ulcerative Colitis
28
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the colon characterized by continuous mucosal inflammation that typically begins in the rectum and extends proximally in a uniform pattern. Its pathogenesis involves a complex interplay of genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, and environmental influences. These factors converge to impair the colon’s epithelial defenses and promote an exaggerated inflammatory response against luminal contents.Breakdown of the Mucosal...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease IV: Clinical Manifestations

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses two major chronic disorders—ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease—each characterized by relapsing episodes of gastrointestinal inflammation. Although they share certain clinical features, their patterns of involvement and manifestations differ in ways that aid diagnosis and guide management.Ulcerative ColitisUlcerative colitis is limited to the colon and rectum and involves continuous inflammation of the mucosal layer.
