This study reports a rare case of choanal polyps originating from the uncinate process, a previously undocumented nasal cavity source. This finding expands the known ectopic origins of these benign nasal tumors.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Rhinology
- Pathology
Background:
- Choanal polyps are benign, solitary soft tissue lesions originating from nasal or paranasal sinus mucosa.
- They typically progress through sinus ostia into the nasopharynx, with antrochoanal polyps being the most common type.
- Ectopic origins include the nasal septum, sphenoid sinus, ethmoid sinus, turbinates, and meatus.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a rare case of choanal polyps originating from the uncinate process of the nasal cavity.
- To review the existing literature on ectopic origins of choanal polyps.
Main Methods:
- Case presentation of a 52-year-old woman with choanal polyps.
- Literature review of reported ectopic origins of choanal polyps.
Main Results:
- A rare case of choanal polyps originating from the uncinate process was identified.
- The uncinate process has not been previously reported as an ectopic origin for choanal polyps.
Conclusions:
- The uncinate process represents a novel ectopic origin for choanal polyps.
- This case expands the understanding of the anatomical origins of choanal polyps.
