    Summary

    Digitizing conventional dental impressions with a desktop scanner is more accurate than using an intraoral scanner. Both methods, however, appear clinically acceptable for complete denture fabrication.

    Background:

    • Conventional impressions are crucial for fabricating retentive complete dentures.
    • Digitizing these impressions enables integration into hybrid digital workflows.
    • Assessing the accuracy of digitized impressions is vital for clinical success.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the trueness of digitized conventional impressions for data acquisition.
    • To compare the accuracy of intraoral scanners (IOS-IMP) and desktop scanners (LAB-IMP) against a digitized master cast (LS-MOD).
    • To analyze discrepancies in anatomical landmarks (peripheral, ridge, postdam, palatal vault) between scanning methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty conventional maxillary edentulous impressions were digitized using intraoral and desktop scanners.
    • Impressions were used to create stone casts, which were then digitized using a desktop scanner.
    • Root-mean-square (RMS) difference was calculated by superimposing scans onto the master cast.

    Main Results:

    • Desktop scanner digitization of master casts (LS-IMP) showed significantly less deviation (38.90 ±7.67 µm) than intraoral scans (IOS-IMP) (75.11 ±22.37 µm) (p<0.01).
    • Within the desktop scanner group, significant deviations were noted between peripheral landmarks and both palatal vault and postdam areas.
    • Overall, desktop scanning of the master cast was more accurate than intraoral scanning.

    Conclusions:

    • Desktop scanning of a master cast demonstrates higher accuracy than intraoral scanning for digitizing conventional impressions.
    • Significant differences exist in landmark accuracy when using a desktop scanner to digitize a master cast.
    • Both intraoral and desktop scanning methods appear clinically acceptable for complete maxillary edentulous impressions.
