Compact topological edge modes in subwavelength grating waveguide arrays with gauge flux
None:
The interplay between flat bands and topology has the potential to enhance the localization and robustness of topological edge modes, yet their realization in planar waveguide platforms remains challenging. Here, we introduce a synthetic gauge flux by leveraging degenerate modes in planar subwavelength grating waveguides, enabling Aharonov-Bohm caging effect and the formation of a flat-band lattice. The resulting edge modes are ultracompact, which can be confined to the last two waveguides at the boundary. These robust modes remain highly localized against coupling coefficient and geometric variations. Our findings offer a route toward compact and robust light transport in integrated photonic circuits operating in the telecommunication band.

Compact Bone
Compact bone, also called cortical bone, is the denser, stronger of the two types of bone tissue. It is found under the periosteum and in the diaphyses of long bones, where it provides support and protection. The microscopic structural unit of compact bone is called an osteon, or haversian system. Each osteon is composed of concentric rings of calcified...

What is a Mode?
There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times.
A data set with two modes is called bimodal. For example,...
