    Summary

    Intranuclear filamentous structures were found in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and optic neuritis (ON). However, this study found no evidence of a viral cause for these structures in ON or MS patients.

    Background:

    • Ultrastructural studies identified intranuclear filamentous structures in lymphocytes of multiple sclerosis (MS) and optic neuritis (ON) patients.
    • The etiology of ON and MS remains incompletely understood, with viral causes hypothesized.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential viral origin of intranuclear filamentous structures observed in ON and MS.
    • To correlate the presence of these structures with the etiology of ON and MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Virological and serological techniques were employed to detect and isolate infectious agents.
    • Peripheral blood and body excretions from 12 monosymptomatic ON patients during their first acute attack were analyzed.
    • Immunofluorescence and cytochemical analyses were performed on serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples.
