Abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE) affects 4.2% of women with surgical scars in Ukraine, most commonly occurring after cesarean sections. This condition presents as a palpable mass and cyclic pain, requiring histopathological confirmation for diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Gynecology
- Surgical Pathology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.
- Abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE) is a rare form, often associated with surgical scars.
- Cesarean scar endometriosis (CSE) is a subtype of AWE.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the incidence of AWE in Ukraine.
- To analyze clinical, imaging, and histopathological findings of CSE patients.
Main Methods:
- A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted from January 2020 to December 2024.
- Data from 9,157 reproductive women with painful masses in surgical scar areas across 27 hospitals in Ukraine were analyzed.
- Endometriosis definitions followed WHO guidelines.
Main Results:
- The incidence of AWE was 4.2% (387/9,157).
- Cesarean scar endometriosis accounted for 82.2% of AWE cases.
- Main symptoms included palpable abdominal mass (100%) and cyclic pain (86.8%). The latency period from cesarean section to symptom onset was approximately 31.8 months.
Conclusions:
- Abdominal wall endometriosis is relatively uncommon in Ukraine, typically arising from obstetric or gynecologic surgical scars.
- Cesarean scar endometriosis is the most frequent form of AWE observed in this study.
- Diagnosis relies on histopathological examination.

Ultrasound I: Abdominal Ultrasonography
Abdominal ultrasonography, commonly known as abdominal ultrasound, is a vital, non-invasive medical imaging technique widely used in healthcare.
Procedure:
This diagnostic tool allows the clinician to visually inspect internal structures within the abdomen, including vital organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen.
The abdominal ultrasound process begins with applying a special gel to the patient's skin over the abdomen. This gel enhances the...
