Long-term lithium treatment may reduce sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) in bipolar disorder (BD) patients, particularly ease of excitation. Low SPS traits might predict a good response to lithium therapy.

- The Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSPS) assessed SPS traits (EOE, LST, AES); the Alda Scale evaluated lithium treatment quality.

- Lithium-treated patients showed significantly lower HSPS total scores and EOE compared to those on other mood stabilizers (p=0.009 and p=0.002, respectively).
- Aesthetic sensitivity (AES) and low sensory threshold (LST) scores were similar between groups, though statistical power was limited.
- A negative correlation was found between LST scores and Alda Scale scores (r = -0.484; p=0.031).
Conclusions:
- Longitudinal lithium treatment may decrease overall SPS, especially "ease of excitation," in bipolar disorder patients.
- Lower SPS traits might be a factor contributing to a good response to lithium.
- Lithium treatment may not affect aesthetic sensitivity, a trait linked to creativity.
- "Low sensory threshold" could be a negative predictor for lithium treatment outcomes.
