Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between gaseous air pollutants (NO2, SO2, CO) and particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) with stroke incidence.
  • To examine the influence of climate variables (humidity, temperature) on stroke occurrence.
  • To explore how these associations vary by season, sex, age, and stroke subtype (ischemic, hemorrhagic).

Main Methods:

  • A case-crossover study design was employed.
  • Stroke patients were recruited, and exposure to air pollutants (NO2, SO2, CO, PM2.5, PM10) was assessed at different time intervals using air quality meters.
  • Covariates such as cooking fuel, domestic ventilation, physical activity, and socioeconomic status were also recorded.

  • Out of 110 recruited stroke patients, 77 had ischemic stroke and 32 had hemorrhagic stroke. 44.5% of cases occurred in young individuals.
  • Multivariate regression analysis indicated that indoor carbon monoxide (CO) and PM2.5 levels, along with the type of cooking fuel used, were significantly associated with stroke occurrence.
  • The cold season showed the highest number of stroke cases.

Conclusions:

  • The study suggests an association between air pollution, climate factors, and stroke incidence.
  • Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) levels varied significantly over time.
  • The findings highlight the need for pollution control measures and integration into stroke prevention guidelines.
