Nurses' Attitudes Toward and Intention to Use TeleSANE Services in Rural and Underserved Communities

Background:
Sexual assault medical forensic exam-ready facilities with access to sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) are concentrated in urban areas. Telehealth SANE (TeleSANE) is a strategy to increase access to care in rural areas.
Aim:
To assess nurses' positive attitudes, confidence, and intention to share information about and encourage use of the Texas Teleforensic Remote Assistance Center (Tex-TRAC) services.
Methods:
Seventy-four nurses participated in Tex-TRAC trainings, where pretests and posttests examined changes in attitudes, confidence, and intention to share information/encourage use of the Tex-TRAC telehealth platform. Paired preassessments/postassessments and logistic regression to predict odds of nurses' intent to share/encourage use of Tex-TRAC were analyzed.
Results:
Improvement in pretest to posttest mean scores of nurses' positive attitudes toward the Tex-TRAC telehealth platform (3.62-3.83), Tex-TRAC technology (4.72- 5.81), confidence (2.32-7.41), and likelihood to share information/encourage use of Tex-TRAC program (1.84-1.96) were seen (all p s <.001).
Discussion:
The findings suggest that targeted training on the SANE telehealth platform increases positive attitudes toward its use, which is critical to sustaining access.
