Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

1.0K
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Protein Folding Quality Check in the RER01:29

Protein Folding Quality Check in the RER

5.3K
ER is the primary site for the maturation and folding of soluble and transmembrane secretory proteins. The calnexin cycle is a specific chaperone system that folds and assesses the confirmation of N-glycosylated proteins before they can exit the ER lumen. The primary players of this quality check pipeline are the lectins, ER-resident chaperones, and a glucosyl transferase enzyme. In case the calnexin system in the lumen fails to salvage a misfolded protein, it is transported to the cytoplasm...

Intrinsically Disordered Proteins02:18

Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

19.6K
Intrinsically disordered proteins are a group of proteins that do not fold into specific three-dimensional structures. Their structural flexibility allows them to complement ordered proteins to perform functions that are inaccessible to rigid structures. They are more common in eukaryotes than prokaryotes and may either be exclusively intrinsically disordered or hybrid proteins, consisting of a mix of ordered and disordered regions. The absence of a rigid structure in these proteins can be...

Bone Disorders01:29

Bone Disorders

5.4K
Aging and its effect on bone remodeling is the most common cause of bone disorders. In young and healthy people, bone deposition and resorption happen at an equal rate to maintain optimal bone health.
Bone deposition is also affected by the levels of sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone that promote osteoblast activity and bone matrix synthesis. When the level of these hormones decreases due to aging, it causes a reduction in bone deposition. As a result, bone resorption by osteoclasts...

Disorders of Erythrocytes01:27

Disorders of Erythrocytes

2.3K
Disorders of erythrocytes, or red blood cells (RBCs), include a range of conditions affecting their number, shape, or function.
Erythrocyte disorders can be broadly categorized into two main types: anemic and polycythemic conditions.
A low oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood due to the loss, lower production, or destruction of erythrocytes is termed anemia. Hemorrhagic anemia, for example, occurs when bleeding from an external wound or internal ulcer reduces erythrocyte counts.
On the other...

Disorders of Leukocytes01:27

Disorders of Leukocytes

2.0K
Leukocyte disorders can lead to either leukopenia, characterized by an abnormally low leukocyte count, or leukocytosis, marked by a very high leukocyte number.
Leukopenia may result from bone marrow disorders, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases. For example, conditions such as multiple myeloma and aplastic anemia can impair the bone marrow's ability to produce adequate leukocytes. Similarly, autoimmune diseases like lupus and viral infections such as HIV can prompt the immune...

Summary

Youth with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often have questions about managing their condition, but many do not ask these during medical appointments. This highlights a need for strategies to encourage question-asking in adolescents with ADHD.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric primary care
  • Adolescent health
  • Neurodevelopmental disorders

Background:

  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) significantly impacts adolescents.
  • Youth with ADHD often have unvoiced questions regarding their condition and treatment.
  • Effective communication during medical visits is crucial for managing ADHD in adolescents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify the types of questions adolescents with ADHD inquire about.
  • To assess the frequency with which these adolescents ask their prepared questions during clinical encounters.
  • To understand the gap between questions adolescents prepare and those they ask.

Main Methods:

  • Adolescents (N=52) aged 11-17 with ADHD from pediatric clinics participated.
  • Participants completed a question prompt list before their medical visits.
  • Recorded and transcribed medical visits were analyzed to compare checked versus asked questions.

Main Results:

  • Adolescents with ADHD checked an average of 5.6 questions.
  • Only 40% of adolescents asked at least one question they had checked.
  • Common questions concerned screen time, outgrowing ADHD, medication during sports/school, and counseling.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescents with ADHD possess numerous questions about their condition and its management.
  • A significant majority (60%) of adolescents did not voice their checked questions during visits.
  • Further research is needed to develop interventions that promote question-asking among youth with ADHD.
